Why You Should Say the Thing You’re Scared to Say

When I say speaking your mind, I mean speaking about that one thing in your mind that you’re not speaking about.

I’ll give you an example to make sense of this.

Let’s say I go up to somebody at a party—and I’m totally making this up off the top of my head, which is actually an example of what I’m talking about.

So I go up to this guy, and I like his shirt. I say,
“Dude, that’s a pretty cool shirt.”

And he looks at me and goes,
“Okay... thanks.”

That’s his response, right? A bit of a facial expression and a kind of tentative thanks.

Now, if I were playing it safe—following a strategy—I might keep talking about the shirt.

Or I might try to justify why I said it.

I’d say something like, “Oh, well, you know, I’m just... I’m a shirt lover, and I’m doing a project on shirts at the moment, and, uh, you know, yours is one...”

You know—I’d come up with some bullshit to try and justify why I said something that seemed to weird him out a little bit.
