Why Unhealthy Body Comparisons Keep Women Depressed

To compare yourself to someone, you would have not to ignore any other point in their life.

However, notice how you selectively focus on the negative, just so you can constantly tell yourself the story that you're doing worse than others.

A common example I notice, especially among women with weight problems, is that they're always looking at the girls who are skinnier than they are, ignoring the fact that, in reality, with around 45% of the world being obese, they’re actually in the top 10% of skinny girls, even if there are girls who are thinner than they are.

That’s exactly what I mean by ‘the selection of evidence’.

They only look at someone who’s doing better, without considering why she might be doing better.

Maybe she’s skinnier because she has cancer.

Maybe she’s skinnier due to genetics.

Maybe she’s actually unhealthy and has low muscle tone.

They don’t think about any of that. In their mind, her size is smaller, and that makes them feel like a loser.

I want you to notice that you’re skewing your perspective.

You’re telling yourself a story about the world that’s very biased, one that ignores almost all the evidence and doesn’t help you.

So, you need to start thinking about why you keep insisting on seeing the world this way when it’s clearly wrong and you are getting nothing out of it
