I wanna talk about a new way to look at anger.
Specifically, I want you to let go of the idea that it’s bad or wrong — that anger is somehow a failure, an emotional weakness, that a fully enlightened, great person would never experience anger, that confidence and anger don’t go together.
I want you to let go of all of those ideas.
There’s a term I started using for anger that really helped me reframe it:
I stopped calling it bad, or wrong, or a failure —
and I started calling it the dark emotion.
I think of it kind of like this:
If I have an army — my emotions are a team, like an army —
then anger is my assassin.
The rest of the team is a little bit scared of him,
because he’s very powerful and very dangerous…
but he’s also one of the most productive emotions.
You need anger to protect the rest of the team.
It’s the dark horse — but it’s absolutely necessary.
And that’s what I want to help you reframe:
Anger isn’t just something that causes destruction in your life.
It’s a protective, dark, powerful force.
Think of anger as the thing that helps you fight off a lion.
Anger is the thing that helps you protect your family when someone breaks into the house.
