The Hidden Arrogance of People-Pleasing

One of the Nice Guy limiting belief we're going to address is one that basically says, I'm not judgmental.

This idea that you are a reasonable, fair, accurate person, and you view the world in a way that is unbiased and objective.

Therefore, if you think anything negative about another person—or about yourself—you're simply observing the facts.

It comes from an underlying belief that’s kind of twofold.

One is this idea: I'm good at reading people.

We like to think that we’re good at reading people because we really hope that we are. We’re pretty good at manipulating people, so we assume we must be able to read them quite well.

So, if we read them as being a bad or negative person, we must be accurately measuring them.

Then, there’s this underlying fear beneath all of that—the fear of being wrong.

We're so afraid of being wrong, so afraid of the consequences of being wrong, that we will force ourselves to believe that we are right.

This particularly applies to our judgments of others.

When we make a judgment on another person, we assume that we are accurate—and therefore the judgment is correct and not unfair in any way.
