I had a session with a guy today who's successful by all the most well accepted criteria. He’s got himself a nice big family, he’s rich, he’s important, he’s powerful… all that kind of stuff.

And he's finally reached that point in his life - as a lot of people do - where ticking all those boxes doesn't feel as good as it's supposed to feel.

While everybody else thinks he's successful and validates what he’s done with his life, he still feels like he's missing something. He’s filled with a vague dread that maybe he’s actually doing it all wrong!

I don't know how many times we have to learn this lesson.

Success is not an external measure. It's not something that's outside of your control.

Sure, if you think of being rich or famous or powerful as being successful, you can occasionally attain it. But it can always be taken away from you. It'll always become the new baseline that you quickly take for granted.

There are always diminishing returns on external rewards. External success will never be fully satisfying.

The definition of true success should be about something that is entirely inside of you. It should be something you can entirely determine for yourself, no matter what other people do or whatever results you get.

Success is about integrity. It's about how well your actions align with your principles, how healthy your intentions are, how responsible your decision-making process is…not the results you get.
