Emotions have a use-by date.
You have to release them very quickly after they arise — otherwise they start to go off.
They begin to decompose.
However, they don’t go away.
They just turn into something else.
Anger can turn into violence and rage.
Sadness can turn into depression.
Fear can turn into chronic anxiety or panic attacks.
You see this all the time.
I work with a lot of people who have panic attacks, and I can always find huge amounts of dishonesty around fear.
Often, the reason they have panic attacks — it's pretty reasonable to assume — is because they’re not expressing fear when it comes up.
It builds. It compounds.
Same with anger.
Anger and fear together create a really toxic soup if they’re not released appropriately.
Fear is actually a trigger for anger — but then anger can become a trigger for fear, especially if you’re ashamed of it.
And it loops: afraid—angry—afraid—angry…
Never releasing anything.
