Outlasting Rage: How to Stay Calm in Any Confrontation

What outlasting rage is really about—is endurance.

You’ve got to understand that—they cannot keep it up forever.

I’ve worked with some of the angriest people on the planet.
And I promise you, that is not an exaggeration.
Some of the most violent, aggressive, rage-filled psychopaths that have ever walked the Earth—you know?
And even they run out of energy. Even they run out of ammo.

The human body simply cannot pump cortisol and other stress hormones that long, that hard, without eventually crashing. It has to go into remission.

So, I just outlasted them.

The kind of mindset that I found really helpful in those kinds of interactions was:
“I’ll take as long as I need.”

I’d almost relax into it—like,
“Well, I guess I’ll clear my appointments for the afternoon and just let this guy blow up the lines.”

My job was just to not resist and not back down.

No matter what nasty shit they said—no matter the made-up, unfair accusations, the personal slights, the attacks on my character—I’d just say,
“Yeah, I can see you feel that way. I can see you think that. I hear you.”

I wouldn’t defend myself.
But I wouldn’t say, “Oh, you’re right—I’ve been unfair,” either.
I wouldn’t back down.

I’d just acknowledge. And the punches would fly past.

And after a while—you’re just calm.
And they cannot outlast your calm.

If you put rage and calm in the same room, either one person’s going to become enraged, or the other person’s going to calm down.
But you will not maintain that difference for very long.
