If you pay attention, you’ll notice that there’s no such thing as being completely 50/50 on something.
If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll admit that you’re never exactly in the middle.
The idea of 51% describes which side you slightly lean towards.
Take, for example, some political issue: should sex education be taught in schools?
You might be the kind of person who, depending on who you're talking to, would take different sides.
If you're with someone who's really for it, you’d be like, "Yeah, I can see that’s a good idea."
If you're with someone who's against it, you’d say, "Yeah, fair enough."
If you're with both, you’d say, "I can see both sides of your story."
That’s a real nice guy thing, by the way—"I see both sides of the story." It’s a cop-out.
However, if you’re alone, or if someone put a gun to your head and said, "Decide and make your decision as honestly as you can, or I'll shoot your brains out," which way would you lean?
If nobody was going to judge you, no matter what, if someone was going to accept whatever answer, if everybody was going to approve of your position— which way would you go?
Even if it’s like, "I barely feel this, just a fraction, like one hair over the line right now..."
The 51% rule says: once you've identified which side of the line you’re on, act as if you're 100% committed to it.
Why? Because a truly authentic person is very clear on what they’re for and against.
They don’t sit in the middle.
They don’t sit in maybe.
They’re either really against it or really for it.
