Are You Secretly Judgmental? How Comparing Yourself to Others Holds You Back

A lot of you will think that you're not judgmental.

And yet, if you notice, you will compare yourself to others.

If, for example, you think of yourself as a kind person, then other people must be unkind in comparison.

If you think of yourself as a generous person, then other people must be stingy.

If you think that you're a good person, other people must be bad.

And of course, the opposite applies.

You'll be at a party, and maybe you think the people there outrank you socially, and you'll think that they're better than you. That's a judgment of them.

This goes on and on—you’re constantly assessing and judging people based on very small, very unreliable pieces of evidence, trying to figure out who's better than you and who's worse than you.

In other words, who's worth more socially than you are, who's more likely to get approval—whether it's you or the other person—and so on.

This is essentially a risk assessment.

You're trying to figure out who's a risk to you socially, who outranks you, who outshines you, and who's going to steal the approval that you need.

Even seeing other people as judgmental is being judgmental.

How do you know that they're judgmental?
